Your stream keeps dropping
A stream that keeps cutting out is the worst feeling in IRL streaming, and it is rarely one single cause. This guide goes through it in the order that finds the problem fastest: what your viewers are actually seeing, whether the trouble is the connection or the phone in your hand, and what to change first. Some of it you can fix in ten seconds standing where you are. Some of it is a dead spot, and knowing the difference is most of the job.
What a drop actually looks like from the other side
Before you change anything, it helps to know what your viewers saw, because different symptoms point at different causes.
- A stutter or a freeze of a second or two, then it carries on. Something got in the way and the stream recovered. One of these on a walk is normal and not worth chasing.
- A long freeze, then the picture jumps forward. Data stopped arriving for a while and then caught up. This is a connection struggling rather than failing.
- The stream goes offline and comes back a moment later. The connection was gone long enough that your platform gave up on it. Super Simple IRL keeps trying to reconnect on its own, so this often heals without you doing anything.
- The picture is soft, blocky, or smeary but never stops. That is not a drop. That is your bitrate being reduced to fit the connection, which is the app protecting the stream rather than failing.
Remember that everything your chat tells you is a little behind you. There is always a delay between what your camera sees and what a viewer watches, so the spot your chat is complaining about is the spot you were standing in a few seconds ago, not the one you are in now. See what is latency.
Two different problems: the connection, or the phone
Almost every dropping stream is one of these two, and they need opposite fixes. Sort out which one you have before you start changing settings.
Stand still and try to load a page or a video on the same phone, on mobile data, right where you are. If that is slow or fails too, the network is the problem and no setting in the app will conjure signal. If the rest of the phone is perfectly happy and only the stream keeps falling over, look at the phone instead: heat, battery restrictions, or something else on the device competing for the camera and mic.
One more clue worth having. Uploading is the hard part of streaming, and it is not the same as downloading. A connection that pulls video down happily can still be too weak to push your stream up, so a fast feeling phone is not proof of a good uplink.
What to change, and in what order
Stop walking for a moment
Coverage changes over a few metres. Standing still tells you whether the trouble follows you or belongs to the spot you were in, and it gives the app a stable connection to settle onto.
Lower the target bitrate
This is the first setting to touch, every time. Step the Target bitrate slider down and give it a minute before judging it. A softer picture that never stops beats a sharp one that keeps dying.
Check both of your connections are actually on
Mobile data enabled on the SIM you think you are using, Wi-Fi on if there is Wi-Fi worth having. Bonding can only use links that exist. It is common to discover one SIM quietly turned itself off.
Cool the phone down
Out of direct sun, off a hot dashboard, case off if it is a thick one. Heat is the reason so many streams go wrong at the one hour mark rather than at the start.
Then, and only then, drop resolution or frame rate
If bitrate alone has not fixed it, a lower resolution asks less of both the network and the encoder. This is a bigger visible change than bitrate, which is why it comes later.
Accept the dead spot
If none of the above moved the needle and the phone cannot load a web page either, you are in a hole in the coverage. Keep talking, keep walking, and it will come back.
Checking signal where you are standing
Signal is a local thing. It changes with a few steps, with which way you are facing, and with what is between you and the mast. The bars on your phone are a rough summary of one moment, and they are measured for the network’s benefit, not yours, so treat them as a hint rather than a verdict.
Things that genuinely help on the spot:
- Step into the open. A doorway, a bridge, an underpass, or the shadow side of a large building can each be enough on their own.
- Stop holding the phone against your body. Your hand and your torso both absorb signal, and a phone tucked into a chest mount against a coat is a worse antenna than one held out.
- Give it a few seconds after you move. Networks take a moment to hand you over, and so does the app when it shifts traffic between connections.
- Expect crowds to be bad. A packed street, a festival, or a stadium can have full bars and almost no capacity, because everyone there is sharing the same mast. This is the case where lowering bitrate helps most.
Lowering the bitrate, and why it comes first
Bitrate is how much data your video uses per second. It is the one number that decides whether your connection can keep up, which is why it is the first thing to change and the last thing to raise. Setting it higher than your uplink can hold is the single most common cause of a stream that keeps dropping. See what is bitrate for the full picture.
If you are in Simple mode, the target bitrate is the setting you are looking for, and it is deliberately the only one you need. Step it down, watch for a minute, and step it down again if the stream is still unhappy. When you find a number that holds all the way along your usual route, leave it there. That number is worth more to you than any advice on a website, because it was measured on your route, on your network, on your phone.
What bonding is already doing without you touching it
While you are working through the list above, the app is already working. An hour in: heat, battery, and throttling
A phone that is filming, encoding, and uploading at the same time is working about as hard as a phone can work, and it gets warm doing it. When it gets too warm it protects itself by slowing down, which means the encoder starts falling behind and your stream degrades even though the signal is fine. This is why so many streams are perfect for an hour and then are not.
What to do about it:
- Keep the phone in air. Out of direct sun, off hot surfaces, and out of a pocket or a closed bag. A thick case is an insulator.
- Charge with care. A power bank keeps you live, but charging makes its own heat, so a phone that is charging inside a sealed mount in the sun is fighting two battles.
- Turn battery saver off. It throttles the processor to save power, and a throttled processor drops frames.
- Let the app run unrestricted. Android’s battery settings can limit an app that has been running for a long time. If your phone offers an unrestricted or unlimited battery option for Super Simple IRL, use it.
- Pick a lower resolution for long sessions. Less work per frame means less heat, and less heat means the stream you started with is the stream you finish with.
When only one carrier has coverage
Out in the countryside, or deep inside a building, you can easily end up with one usable connection instead of several. Bonding has nothing to bond, and the stream behaves like a normal single connection stream: whatever that one link can carry is what you get.
That is not a failure, but it does change what you should do. Lower your bitrate more than you would in town, because there is no second link to take up the slack when the first one dips. If you often stream in the same thin coverage area, the best thing you can do is bring someone whose phone is on a different network: carriers put their masts in different places, and the one that fails you is often not the one that fails your friend.
When there is no signal to be had
Sometimes the honest answer is that there is nothing to connect to. A valley, a lift, a basement, a tunnel, a stretch of road with no mast for miles: no app can invent a network that is not there, and any product that tells you otherwise is selling you something.
What you can do is plan around it. Learn your route and know where the holes are. Lower your bitrate before you walk into one rather than after. Tell your chat you are about to go through a bad patch, because viewers forgive a warned gap far more easily than a silent one. And if the whole area is dead, that is a place to film for later rather than a place to go live.
